Q: What are dental implants made of?

A: Dental implants are comprised of three different pieces. The visible part of your implant—the part that is designed to look like a natural tooth—is crafted from porcelain. This is because porcelain resembles natural enamel and stands up to wear and tear. The actual root of your implant is a titanium screw. The root is titanium because titanium bonds to natural bone through a process called osseointegration. Consequently, your implant root will form a stable foundation with your jawbone. These two pieces are connected with an abutment. Your abutment may be made of ceramic, titanium, or steel.

Q: How long does dental implant treatment take to complete?

A: Our dentist places dental implants in two separate phases. First we will surgically implant the titanium screw into your jawbone. Then we give your jawbone time to heal, and we wait for the titanium root to bond with your natural bone. This usually takes a couple of months. Once your mouth is healed, we will attach your final dental implant restoration to your implant root. The entire process generally takes a few months.
