Elmhurst Dentist Reviews Common Problems that Can Result from Chronic TMJ Dysfunction

Written by Dr. Scharfenberg on Apr 9, 2013

If you’ve ever suffered from TMJ disorder, you know how annoying and even painful it can be day to day. TMJ dysfunction refers to any inflammation or damage of the Temporomandibular Joint—the joint that connects your lower jaw and skull. TMJ problems can occur in patients of any age. Our Elmhurst TMJ dentists are committed to helping patients overcome TMJ problems and smile comfortably again. Why is it so important that patients seek treatment for this common disorder?

TMJ dysfunction may be annoying in the short-term, but left untreated this condition can intensify and contribute to serious problems like…

Jaw clicking—some patients suffering from TMJ can actually hear their jaws clicking when they eat or smile. This clicking or popping sensation can be very uncomfortable and unnerving.

Aching jaw—untreated TMJ dysfunction often leads to regular jaw pain and stiffness. Sometimes this pain may extend to the next area. This can make it painful for patients to eat and even speak.

Limited jaw mobility—over time it may even become difficult to open your mouth fully with TMJ disorder. We’ve seen patients who can no longer eat regularly and speak normally because their jaws have seized up.

Dental damage—TMJ disorder often occurs concurrently with bruxism- (chronic dental grinding). Dental grinding exacerbates TMJ problems, and jaw tension from TMJ can intensify dental grinding. Over time bruxism can weaken your dental enamel and actually damage/crack your teeth.

If you notice that you’re suffering from TMJ issues, talk to your dentist about it as soon as possible. The sooner you start an effective treatment regimen, the better off you’ll be!
