When you optimize your oral hygiene routine, you give your smile a chance to stay healthy and clean between professional dental cleanings. Our Elmhurst dentists help all of our patients, regardless of age, develop strong at-home oral hygiene routines that work for them

Today we are going to be talking about some of the key things that you can do in order to maintain your teeth at home.

1. Brush your teeth as recommended by your dentist

Most dental patients should be brushing their teeth morning and night. Make sure you are using a toothbrush that fits comfortably in the back of your mouth, and that the bristles of the brush are not too rough on your smile. Also, it’s very important that you brush your teeth for at least two minutes every time that you brush.

2. Floss regularly

Don’t forget to floss at least once a day—preferably at night before you go to bed. Floss before you brush your teeth, so that you are able to brush away loosened dental debris and plaque.

3. Stay hydrated

Most people think of at-home dental care as occurring in the morning and at night. However, you can boost your oral health throughout the day by drinking plenty of water. Water helps to clear away dental debris in your smile, and, when you drink enough water, you empower your body to produce enamel-strengthening saliva. Every time that you drink water, and choose water over other beverages, you are helping your smile.

As you can see, there are a number of simple things that you can do in order to help protect and care for your smile every single day. If you want to learn more about at-home dental care, our Elmhurst dentists are here to help you every step of the way.
