Elmhurst Pediatric Dentist Provides Important Guidance And Care For Young Dental Patients

Written by Dr. Scharfenberg on Aug 23, 2016

Pediatric dental care is very important, but many adults—parents and care providers—come to our dental team with questions about why pediatric dental care is necessary, and what types of treatments are recommended. So, today our Elmhurst pediatric dentists are sharing information about dental care designed for children. Let’s get started!

Pediatric dental care is designed for children who still have their primary teeth. The American Dental Association actually recommends that parents bring in their children for professional cleaning/assessments before they even have all of their primary teeth!

A key component of pediatric dental care is the semi-annual professional cleaning. During these cleanings our dental team is able to minimize the amount of plaque in your child’s mouth, and help them maintain a fresh and clean smile. Because plaque causes cavities and gum disease, you really don’t want to leave it alone to build up.

Although your child will eventually lose his or her primary teeth, we want to keep them strong and healthy for as long possible. We treat cavities with metal-free, natural looking fillings and crowns. Primary teeth are very important for allowing your child to learn to speak properly, expand his or her diet, and feel confident smiling. Additionally, your child’s primary teeth serve as placeholders along his or her gum line, so that permanent teeth will be able to emerge.

Another important thing that our dental team does is to educate our young patients about the important of dentistry and at-home oral hygiene care. We know that you are helping your kids develop healthy oral hygiene habits; we’re here to reinforce what you teach at home!
