As we’re all busy making resolutions and looking forward to the new year, now is the perfect time to think about how you’ll care for your smile in 2018. Our Elmhurst dentists have put together this short list of recommendations of things to consider as you make your dental plan for the new year. Let’s get started!
As you take a look at your calendar for 2018, take the time now to schedule your semi-annual professional cleanings. These cleanings allow our dental team to clear away accumulated plaque and tartar. The general recommendation from the ADA is that patients complete these cleanings every six months or so. If you need to schedule cleanings more frequently, your dental team will let you know. It’s so easy to fall behind on these cleanings, so get them on your schedule now!
Now on to at-home dental care! Are there simple things that you can do to take your daily dental care to the next level?
- Make sure that you’re using the right toothbrush—most patients do well with a soft-bristled brush, which is gentle on your enamel and oral tissues
- Try to brush for at least two minutes every time that you brush—you can even set a timer or listen to a 2-minute long song to help you keep track
- Apply gentle pressure when you brush, and move your toothbrush in small circular buffing motions over your enamel
- Try to floss right before you brush your teeth at night, as this helps to dislodge plaque from the day before you promptly clear it away
As always, our Elmhurst dentists are happy to provide you with any additional information you may need to optimize your oral hygiene routine in the new year. The best way to get started is to schedule a consultation with our dental team—give us a call!
