As the weather gets warmer, and summer sets in, our daily routines change. You may not realize it, but these changes can actually affect our smiles! So, as you enjoy these summer months, keep these summer oral health tips from our Elmhurst dentists in mind.
Summer Treats
Certain foods and drinks just scream summer: popsicles, ice cream, and lemonade, just to name a few. While these treats are certainly delicious, they also have very high sugar contents. And beverages like lemonade are additionally very acidic, and acid can harm dental enamel over time.
So, when you do indulge in these classic summer snacks, try to do so in a limited period of time. It is better for your smile if you drink a glass of lemonade over a discreet period of time, for example, rather than sipping constantly throughout the day. Additionally, make sure that you drinking plenty of water along with sugary foods and drinks, as water helps to dislodge dental debris and promote saliva production. You can further get into the habit of rinsing your mouth with water right after eating or drinking.
Summer Activities
Another thing to keep in mind is that with warm weather comes increased outdoor activity! If these excursions are contact sports or extreme physical activities, you may need to wear a protective mouth guard to protect your smile. Talk to your dental team about whether a customized mouthpiece is recommended for any the sports or activities in which you participate. If a mouth guard is recommended, please make sure to wear it diligently—it is so much more cost-effective and comfortable to prevent serious dental damage, rather than try to treat it after the fact.
